RAPE and statutory sexual assault have become the most frequent crimes in India, a recent study has revealed.
The National Crime Records Bureau said in a report that more than 2.5 million rapes were reported in the country in 2016.
The data, which was compiled from the National Crime Information Bureau, showed that India had the world’s fifth-highest number of reported rapes in 2016, at 7,957.
India recorded 2,935 rape cases in 2016 and 7,068 reported sexual assault cases, according to the report.
In a separate report, the Crime Branch of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) said that there were 5,742 rape cases registered in the state of Uttar Pradesh, and another 2,788 rape cases recorded in the northern state of Bihar.NIA said that the crimes ranged from sexual harassment to kidnapping, including abduction, forcible confinement, rape and other offences.
It also said that rapes in the United States were reported to the FBI at a rate of 6 per 100,000 people in 2016 while India’s rape rate was 1.6 per 100 million people.
