The latest census data for India revealed that the total number of young people aged under 25 in the country increased from 5,86,742 in 2016 to 7,26,000 in 2020.
The trend is evident across the country, especially among the young, according to data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
There were also an increase in the number of women aged under 18 in the age group, from 8.6 lakh to 10.4 lakh in the same period.
The total number also grew by 4.7% in the population between ages 15 and 64, from 2.6 crore to 2.8 crore.
In 2017, there were more than 1.3 billion young people under the age of 25 in India in the total population of 4.3 crore.
This figure was up from 1.2 billion in 2016.
The overall percentage of young Indian men aged under 20 in the census was 12.4% in 2017.
However, the percentage of men aged over 30 in the Census stood at 26.6% in 2016, up from 23.2% in 2020, while the percentage among women aged between 18 and 25 stood at 15.4%, up from 15.2%.
According to the NCRB, among the 18-24 age group the highest percentage of women was at 19.4%.
The latest data shows that in the last 10 years, the number for males has increased from 16.2 million in 2015 to 18.8 million in 2017, while in the 19-24 year group the number was 13.4 million.
According to this year’s census data, the total percentage of the population in the city of Bangalore who are aged under 50 is 22.6%.
In terms of growth of the young generation, in the 10 years to 2020, there was a 6.2 percent increase in male population, compared to 7.5 percent increase for females.
The growth of females in the young age group has been going up, while that of males has been declining.
The number of the female under 25 years in 2020 stood at 17.9 million.
In 2017, the male population was at 14.6 million, while it stood at 11.1 million in 2020 and 5.7 million in 2030.
The women under 25 stood on 15.1% in 2019, but rose to 16.1 percent in 2020 but then fell to 12.6 percent in 2021.
The Census 2016 also showed that the overall population of the nation has increased by 6.9 percent, or about 1.7 billion, since the census in 2000.
The growth of population has been attributed to several factors, including the increase in education, the rise of the number and quality of health facilities, better sanitation and better education.
The population is now in the range of 1.85 billion, while its share of the total economic output has increased to 18 percent from 17.6 in 2000, according the National Sample Survey Organisation.
According the NSSO, the growth of total GDP per capita is estimated to be at 6.6 per cent in 2020 from 6.4 per cent a decade ago.
